Fourteen done ... 38 to go...

What: #56 See a U of M lacrosse game

Where: Michigan Stadium
When: April 26th
Why: Living so close to the University of Michigan, I’ve been privileged to experience a wide variety of sporting events on campus, and as more varsity sports were added, I realized that there were still many that I had not attended. Just this year, lacrosse was added, and lacrosse is a totally foreign sport to me. Many youth lacrosse leagues exist in the area, but to my recollection, this sport did not have any popularity when I was growing up, so I stuck to the traditional soccer and track and field.

Having made the decision to see a lacrosse game, and with the intention of seeing the Michigan women’s “Team One” play a game, an unexpected turn of events transpired. A couple of months ago, I was asked to work with a volunteer new to my place of work. It was immediately apparent this volunteer was an athlete for the Wolverines; his entire wardrobe consisted of nothing but maize and blue attire, adorned with block Ms, almost as if a required uniform. After a few weeks, we started talking about his sport, and he explained that he plays lacrosse! It ended up that JD was able to get tickets for me and friends to see him play his last home game at The Big House.

Arriving at the stadium on game day, it is quite a contrast to the typical football game day experience, but it was still a larger crowd than I had expected. There were many youth teams there to see the game, and I don’t think I quite understood the extent of the popularity. We came in during the first period and our first impression was how frequently they score; I had assumed it was much like hockey or soccer, with goals being a bit rare. Instead, the first half of the game saw nearly 20 points scored! Also, I had no vague idea of the rules, but there were video excerpts played on the video boards between periods (some starring JD!) explaining what was happening. This helped immensely!

The fast pace of the game, the speed of the players, the occasional outbursts of pummeling and checking with the lacrosse sticks, it made for a rather exciting afternoon! I preferred the second half when JD got his playing time as a defender and we could cheer for him; having a personal connection made it more fun. We all enjoyed it, and I’d love to go see a women’s game in the next season to see them play, too!

What: #43 Take a picture every hour of the day for one day

When: December 31st
Where: Southeastern Michigan
Why: I enjoy photography, and usually I do most of my camera-wielding on official vacations or during my travels to interesting locales. I miss out on documenting the day-to-day events of life, and so this forced me to do so. Without further ado...

...from 12:01am until 3:01, I was in bed, watching the snow fall in the darkness of the city night...
...from 4:01 until 7:01, I continued watching the snow outside in the sparkling lights...
...from 8:01-11:01, I finally got up and admired the apartment's details, from the artwork to the hallway...
...from 12:01pm-3:01, I had an orange and then headed out to make sushi at the Elliott's lovely home ...
...from 4:01-7:01, I relaxed in my city apartment, then went to the historic Trinity Lutheran church...
...from 8:01-11:59, I celebrated New Year's Eve in Northville with my good friends!

What: #90 Watch “The Goonies”

When: June 23rd
Where: Ann Arbor Summer Festival
Why: It often is brought to my attention that I missed out on pivotal adolescent rites of passage, such as reading certain books (ex: Lord Of The Flies and the Diary of Anne Frank) and seeing certain films. This was one of those movies that is frequently referenced by friends, and I had no idea what I was missing. Luckily, there was a big screen showing of "The Goonies" scheduled for this year at Top of the Park - part of the summer festival - and so in addition to finally seeing this flick, it was also a chance to spend time at one of my favorite summer traditions, hang out with some friends, and enjoy a really beautiful summer night under the stars. The movie was really good - altho I think I appreciated it more an an adult than I would have as a tween. It was fun to see Sean Astin as such an "impassioned little speech giver" as Stef said, and that was so accurate! He was really a great child actor! And of course, I love adventure tales (I do own the full set of Indiana Jones movies), especially adventure tales with cheesy happy endings!

What: #22 Paddle board

When: June 22nd
Where: Stony Creek Metropark
Why: In my constant quest for fun activities, the recent craze of paddle-boarding really captured my attention. I've always known surfing would not be for me, but this seemed like a version of standing on the water's surface to get a similar thrill in a much smaller dose. And I'll be honest, I wish I could say I learned about it in a very trendy fitness magazine or cool blog or other less embarrassing manner, but truthfully, I learned about it from this show (skip ahead to 8 minutes; and yes, I might one day put a few more of those activities on my list!).

So, there isn't any ocean access around here, but we do have Great Lakes and smaller lakes, so it seemed that this was something I could accomplish this summer. With a few friends who have done this before, I embarked on a day out on the lake to give it my best shot. I was tempting fate by wearing neither a swimsuit nor a life jacket, but the board is much larger than I thought, and much more buoyant. I was able to get from my knees to my feet pretty quickly, and with only a few close calls, I actually stayed up the whole time! The wind was not in our favor for most of the day, and even a 2-inch wave seemed a little terrifying from atop my board, but we managed to find a nice spot to eventually relax in the middle of the lake to soak up our morning of paddle-boarding.

What: #18 See a professional women’s football game

When: June 1st
Where: John Glenn Field
Why: My friend Susie suggested this one for me and I really liked the idea for a few reasons. One, it supports a Detroit-based organization. Two, it supports strong women in non-traditional roles. And three, I miss college football during the spring and summer, so I could still get my fix this way. The team hailing from Detroit, the Detroit Dark Angels, are part of the WFA (Women's Football Association). The team members ranged widely in age, background, and size. At times, I'd forget the players were female, which was cool to realize that they play just like the men; at other times, it was obvious it was a team of women by their interactions with one another on and off the field. The crowd, too, was diverse, including family members and friends, altho I got the impression we might have been the only ones there just to cheer them on without a connection to a particular player. The team plays in Westland, which is quite a ways out from the city of Detroit, so that might be a deterrent to getting a big crowd. They have one more game left for the season, and I wish them the best of luck!

The team logo - on the water jugs - is very cool!

What: #17 Play bar trivia

When: February 4th
Where: Conor O'Neill's
Why: Growing up, my family played Trivial Pursuit, but it was the original edition in the blue box, so most of the questions were from an era before me and thus I didn't have very much useful knowledge about most of the topics. As I learned more, the game was a more enjoyable challenge, and often my brother, my mom, and I would try to beat my dad who is a wealth of amazing trivia. Almost any conversation with him has my jaw agape at some point with a random factoid he just blurts out that is totally relevant, but totally obscure. Thus began my love of trivia. I enjoy surprising my own friends from time to time with the assortment of useless knowledge I possess. So, I thought playing trivia with other like-minded individuals would be a lot of fun. The idea I had in my mind is from a movie I saw last year that was based on bar trivia in Ann Arbor, and so I was excited to find a night to try it out. Luckily, my friend and her boyfriend have gotten into the scene and know the cool places to go, and that's how we ended up at my favorite local Irish pub on Monday night.

I'll admit, I was feeling really confident. Fueled by chicken tenders (a staple food in my diet) and a great drink, I felt good busting out info about Angel Falls in Venezuela and Belinda Carlisle in The GoGos. Oh, and I got almost every question right in the Super Bowl category (more like "Current Events" than "Sports"). But, those were the few shining moments of glory. Most of the questions were not easy. Obscure music references and even more obscure movie trivia. And trying to remember Sabrina's cat's name from "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" (I said "Mr. Bojangles"?!?) and the name of the guy who died while filming Gladiator (huh??), we put our heads together but still had to make completely random guesses a number of times. We had a small (3 of us), but mighty team going up against teams of 5-6 members, so we were at a disadvantage, right?

Anyhow, we didn't win any prizes, but felt in our hearts that we at least went in with the best of intentions and an awesome team name!

Update: I've made a few more attempts at bar trivia with Stef, but at a different place. We've managed to get lucky with a few questions, but overall we do have a pretty deep set of random knowledge to make it a fun outing!

What: # 28 Pop the cork on a bottle of champagne

When: January 5th
Where: Stef's kitchen
Why: There just haven't been many occasions I've been a part of that called for a bottle of champagne; or maybe to clarify, we just didn't ever have one on hand for all the awesome moments. So, I felt that celebrating with a big "POP" of the cork from the bottle was a mark of a really good time. I got my chance as a group of us toasted my friend's birthday. I'll admit that I was quite nervous that I might: break a window, bust a light fixture, hit someone in the eye, give myself a black eye, burst the bottle, and the list goes on. But, I went for it, definitely shrieked a bit when it finally flew off, but had a blast doing it!

What: # 36 Eat at a restaurant I’ve never been to

When: January 5th
Where: Red Rock BBQ
Why: As many of my friends know, I'm a very selective eater, so trying new food (and drink) isn't really that interesting to me, but I've tried to be better about opening up and enjoying the experience of a new atmosphere and every once in awhile, even tasting something I wouldn't normally try. So, while a barbecue joint is not usually my first choice, it was my friend Stef's birthday and her selection, and I was so glad to be a part of the evening as the super awesome "seventh wheel!" Some perks of the place: it was packed, so good people watching; it was warm, which is a big deal in my book; and finally, it smelled good, not overly bbq-ish. If you are in town, try their macaroni and cheese with cornbread - delicious!

What: # 38  Get a fake spray tan

Where: Uphoria
When: December 21st
Tan lines in December?!?
Why: Living in a state with a pretty consistent record for having a high percentage of days with no sunshine, being tan isn't a big deal to me. It's nice in the summer when there is a different glow to my skin, but I'm fair and will often burn to a painful crisp before I get a base tan. Let's just say that sunblock is my friend. I had tried the self-tanning lotion before and found it to be a mess. The idea of a tanning bed seems horrifying, but ever since the ridiculous episode on Friends where Ross gets a spray tan, that captured my interest. They also talk about it, a lot, on Dancing With The Stars, so I figured it must be the cool thing to do. I was telling my friend about it, and they do organic spray tans at the salon she visits, so I went there for my initiation into the world of bronzed goddesses. The whole process is different than I imagined. I was basically in a human car wash, being sprayed by a cold mist (with a pleasant raspberry almond scent!) while I stood in a ventilated tent, then I was dried down with a hairdryer contraption. I could see a difference on my neck and face right away, and it actually continues to look good. There were some glitches...I have really stripey wrists, alternating orange and white like a fruity zebra...but overall it's a fun way to change up your look and bring a bit of the summertime glow to the middle of a dreary winter.

What: #71 Ride a mechanical bull

Where: Twisted Bull
When: December 8th
Why: A few years ago, I was in New Orleans with my college roommate for a friend’s wedding, and we went out after the reception to experience the nightlife, and ended up at a karaoke bar (where we sang a group piece and then split), and a big booming dance club (where we lasted a bit longer) and then walked past a bar with a mechanical bull and really wanted to try it, but since I was in a nice dress and heels, I conceded to watch while another friend of ours did do it, and it was a blast to cheer her on, so it seemed like a cool item to put on the list. I hadn’t come across a place with a mechanical bull, so had to finally Google search it. Turns out, there was a place in Grand Rapids, so it was perfect to do it after the Meijer Gardens. We got to the bar before the bull rides start at 9:30, but we asked our waitress (a nice girl in cheekie undies and chaps…seriously…) if we could hop on earlier and the two men running the show let us. It required a signed waiver (didn’t read it) and a short tutorial from a very tall cowboy (a direct quote: “It’s just like being on top”), and then away we went. The most awkward part is that there are plaid-clad barflies ringing the bull-riding mat on barstools to just gawk, make comments, and leer. Ick. But, with the support of Stef cheering me on, I stayed on until they ended my ride. Stef did a much better impression of a true bull rider…very cool!

What: #98 Walk around the Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids

Where: Frederik Meijer Gardens
When: December 8th
Why: Michigan is a great state, and sometimes I get caught up in going to all sorts of new and exciting destinations around the country and around the world, but then I remember there are amazing things in my own home state. This is one of those places I've heard so much about, and determined it was worthy of making the effort to visit. It's in a part of the state I don't frequently get to because it isn't on the way to Chicago or Up North, so it has to be an end goal for its own sake.

The gardens are an impressive collection of indoor greenhouses and outdoor sculpture gardens, and at this time of year, an array of international Christmas trees and other holiday displays throughout the main building. We started off bundling up to take a wintry walk through the sculpture gardens, enjoying ourselves by making up what the artist should have named each piece because, let's be honest, the actual names never make much sense. For example, we named this one "Mousetrap" like that children's game we played as kids.

The focal point of the garden is this colossus of a sculpture; it is meant to be the vision created by Leonardo da Vinci and finally realized 500 years after he crafted the models and drew up the plans.

One interesting note is that every sculpture had a sign at it reading "Do not touch", but when we wandered through the gardens containing delicate trains, handmade models, and cacti, not a single sign warned us not to touch. And there were plenty of little hands tempted to do so! It was a very crowded day with lots of families - and exchange students? - and lots of fragile ornaments on the many trees, but it was wonderful to see so many people enjoying this type of an outing. Sadly, I don't think the reindeer was having a very good time.

Iceland's Tree!

One very cool thing: As I mentioned, they had miniature scale models of area building and landmarks, one of which I immediately recognized was in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright! As you know if you've perused my list, I really have a thing for his architecture, so when I realized this was a local home, I had to find it, so we ended up learning about a new cool place in "G D Rapids" (as our GPS lady kept repeating).
Scale model made of all natural materials!

What: #96 Wear 4" or higher heels for a night out on the town

Where: The streets of Ann Arbor
When: November 30th
Remember this scene
I think I was only
slightly more graceful!
Why: As has been pointed out to me, I'm not a girlie girl in my fashion choices. My favorite outfit is a great pair of jeans, my favorite flip flops or sneakers, and a great t-shirt or comfy sweatshirt. So, even tho I do own heels and dresses and fancy accessories, they rarely make an appearance. With an upcoming outing with some friends that are all always a well-dressed bunch, I wanted to make an effort to embrace some of my less practical footwear, and with our plans to meet up for drinks and then grab dinner, I saw myself firmly planted on a bar stool or booth cushion for the duration of the evening, thinking my insane footwear wouldn't be put to use for transportation. I was mistaken, and had the pleasure of trotting around the city streets shopping during the busiest night I've ever seen in town aside from the Art Fair. So, fueled by great drinks, dinner, and a delicious cupcake, I braved the stares (I think people thought I must have lost a bet to be parading around in such silly shoes), the cold, the aches, and the constant fear of tipping over and experienced a fun night out from a totally different perspective as a nearly 6-foot tall woman!

What: #68  Host a party at my house

When: Oct 27th
Where: My place
Why: Other than a catered housewarming party when I moved in years ago, I have not been the hostess of any other gathering. I'm just not the hostess type. My skills are not those of a domestic individual. I keep a nice home, I feed myself, I decorate in my own way, but party planning does not appeal to me. Lately, however, I've felt that I wanted a chance to get some of my friends from different circles together to mingle and used the idea I found in a magazine to construct a party idea to do it. It was a clothes swap, something some of my friends and I do very informally on lots of occasions, but nothing ever formal. Today changed that! Everyone was encouraged to bring up to 10 items they were tired of wearing, but that were still perfectly good pieces and would be a fresh addition to our closets.
So, we shared some good stories, watched some big sports games (not very girlie, but important during football/world series season), and I think everyone left with something new they are excited to wear!

What: #16 Play Drag Queen Bingo

Where: Five 15 in Royal Oak
When: June 1
Why: Obviously this list isn't an original idea, and I consulted many versions of "things-to-do-before-you fill in the blank" lists prior to creating my own. My best recollection is that this must have come from one of those. My friends and I tried to go to this place a month or so back, but when we called for reservations, they were booked this far in advance, so I had high hopes for the sort of night we were in for at our first experience with Drag Queen Bingo. Some of my expectations involved big hair and make-up, boisterous personalities, lots of loud humor, probably some disco dancing; I blame the movie "The Birdcage" for most of my preconceived notions. So, upon entering the venue, it already is at odds with my image because it is clearly a dainty coffee shop, not a raucous bar.

And, there is just one drag queen. Wearing slippers. And the most shockingly inappropriate use of Disney princess attire that you could imagine. Think of the most innocent sweet little girl pajamas with the images of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White, and then cut the fabric out in certain places and put huge pillows in others. So, the first game gets started, and we realize that despite the catch phrase of "This ain't your grandma's bingo," it really kinda is, except, well, lamer.

Trust me, I spent many years playing bingo with my grandpa and always had a crazy good time with those Floridians. They have a ton of cards to keep track of, methods for choosing lucky ones, a huge variety of ways to win, contagious enthusiasm for the game, and plenty of fun jokes. Contrast that with the amount of money I paid to have one single bingo card, with lame numbers (I didn't even get to pick one with O-69!), assigned seating away from my other friends, the non-stop jokes that mixed lame bingo witticisms with crude humor, and the whole thing was more awkward for totally different reasons than I expected.

I actually feared I might win!
Our queen seemed to be going through the motions, which it turns out was much better than her/his attitude post-intermission. She/he came back, proclaimed "I'm just doing my job now, Bob", and then simply read off bingo numbers one after the other for the next 5-10 minutes, ignoring the polite requests and desperate pleas from the crowd to liven it back up (ie: "get over it!"), until finally someone won, putting us out of our misery, and that was the end of our night. Seriously. We all speculated what had upset her/him, but unanimously decided that, as a professional, if any of us got pissed at work, we'd have to continue with our jobs that day in a professional capacity, particularly if your job is as an entertainer for crying out loud. As my one friend said, we expected it to be a weird night, but for totally different reasons. Needless to say, we had to go out for a drink afterwards to process what we had all just been through at our first (sadly, probably last) Drag Queen Bingo experience. At least I had my girls with me who salvaged the night with their awesome company!
