What: #43 Take a
picture every hour of the day for one day
When: December 31st
Where: Southeastern Michigan
Why: I enjoy photography, and usually I do most of my camera-wielding on official vacations or during my travels to interesting locales. I miss out on documenting the day-to-day events of life, and so this forced me to do so. Without further ado...
...from 12:01am until 3:01, I was in bed, watching the snow fall in the darkness of the city night...
...from 4:01 until 7:01, I continued watching the snow outside in the sparkling lights...
...from 8:01-11:01, I finally got up and admired the apartment's details, from the artwork to the hallway...
...from 12:01pm-3:01, I had an orange and then headed out to make sushi at the Elliott's lovely home ...
...from 4:01-7:01, I relaxed in my city apartment, then went to the historic Trinity Lutheran church...
...from 8:01-11:59, I celebrated New Year's Eve in Northville with my good friends!

What: # 20 Go to a
murder mystery dinner
When: April 13th
Where: Eastpointe Manor
Why: Once upon a time, I loved "Saved By The Bell" and the murder mystery episode was one of my favorites. It seemed like a fun experience I'd want to share with my friends if the opportunity arose, so when creating this list of new things to do, it made it on there. Prior to going out to the manor where the murder mystery dinner was held, we received "wedding invitations" telling us a bit about the plot and encouraging us to wear particular outfits. When we arrived, it was a pretty good mix of totally tacky wacky 80s prom dresses and other crazy attire. We opted for reusing those bridesmaid dresses you never get to wear again. There were also the more subdued groups, like the table of ladies we ended up sitting with for the dinner show.
There is a lot to remember at a murder mystery show, and mostly we were hungry, thirsty, and people-watching, so didn't get into gathering clues as much as others. It was all done in about 3 acts, and many of the characters are chosen randomly from the audience, like our sweet table-mate who was picked to play Candy the Stripper (this woman looked more like a straight-laced optometrist, so that was a pretty funny choice) and the guy playing the groom did such a good job, I thought he was one of the official cast members! At times, we really felt like we were crashing a wedding reception and trying to figure out what was really going on between the bride and her mom and the maid of honor and the best man. At times the action bordered on feeling a bit fake, like when the "detective" had to basically feed lines to Skip Showers - the pool guy - because he had no idea how to use the binder all the characters were given, but overall, it was done well enough that I really had no idea whodunnit! I tried to blame it on the stripper, but it turns out it was....well, you'll have to go out to see for yourself!

What: # 28 Pop the cork
on a bottle of champagne
When: January 5th
Where: Stef's kitchen
Why: There just haven't been many occasions I've been a part of that called for a bottle of champagne; or maybe to clarify, we just didn't ever have one on hand for all the awesome moments. So, I felt that celebrating with a big "POP" of the cork from the bottle was a mark of a really good time. I got my chance as a group of us toasted my friend's birthday. I'll admit that I was quite nervous that I might: break a window, bust a light fixture, hit someone in the eye, give myself a black eye, burst the bottle, and the list goes on. But, I went for it, definitely shrieked a bit when it finally flew off, but had a blast doing it!

What: # 36 Eat at a
restaurant I’ve never been to
When: January 5th
Where: Red Rock BBQ
Why: As many of my friends know, I'm a very selective eater, so trying new food (and drink) isn't really that interesting to me, but I've tried to be better about opening up and enjoying the experience of a new atmosphere and every once in awhile, even tasting something I wouldn't normally try. So, while a barbecue joint is not usually my first choice, it was my friend Stef's birthday and her selection, and I was so glad to be a part of the evening as the super awesome "seventh wheel!" Some perks of the place: it was packed, so good people watching; it was warm, which is a big deal in my book; and finally, it smelled good, not overly bbq-ish. If you are in town, try their macaroni and cheese with cornbread - delicious!

What: #96 Wear 4" or higher heels for a night out on the town
Where: The streets of Ann Arbor
When: November 30th
Why: As has been pointed out to me, I'm not a girlie girl in my fashion choices. My favorite outfit is a great pair of jeans, my favorite flip flops or sneakers, and a great t-shirt or comfy sweatshirt. So, even tho I do own heels and dresses and fancy accessories, they rarely make an appearance. With an upcoming outing with some friends that are all always a well-dressed bunch, I wanted to make an effort to embrace some of my less practical footwear, and with our plans to meet up for drinks and then grab dinner, I saw myself firmly planted on a bar stool or booth cushion for the duration of the evening, thinking my insane footwear wouldn't be put to use for transportation. I was mistaken, and had the pleasure of trotting around the city streets shopping during the busiest night I've ever seen in town aside from the Art Fair. So, fueled by great drinks, dinner, and a delicious cupcake, I braved the stares (I think people thought I must have lost a bet to be parading around in such silly shoes), the cold, the aches, and the constant fear of tipping over and experienced a fun night out from a totally different perspective as a nearly 6-foot tall woman!

What: #68 Host a party at my house
When: Oct 27th
Where: My place

Why: Other than a catered housewarming party when I moved in years ago, I have not been the hostess of any other gathering. I'm just not the hostess type. My skills are not those of a domestic individual. I keep a nice home, I feed myself, I decorate in my own way, but party planning does not appeal to me. Lately, however, I've felt that I wanted a chance to get some of my friends from different circles together to mingle and used the idea I found in a magazine to construct a party idea to do it. It was a clothes swap, something some of my friends and I do very informally on lots of occasions, but nothing ever formal. Today changed that! Everyone was encouraged to bring up to 10 items they were tired of wearing, but that were still perfectly good pieces and would be a fresh addition to our closets.
So, we shared some good stories, watched some big sports games (not very girlie, but important during football/world series season), and I think everyone left with something new they are excited to wear!

What: #81 Start and maintain a campfire long enough to make s’mores
Where: The Noel family cottage on the shores of Little Glen Lake
When: October 7th
Why: As you may have guessed if you've spent any time reading other segments of this blog, I love the outdoors, and camping is a huge part of the way I get back to nature. I grew up camping, have done everything from car camping, tent camping, backpacking, camper camping, camping for one night to camping for more than a week at a time. So, it may come as a shock to know that at no time did I ever build a campfire. Even as a Girl Scout, I'm pretty sure I got put in charge of something else and let a fellow scout build the fire. I'm not sure why this happened, but as the years went on, I developed awesome skills at other aspects of camping (pitching a tent, navigating hiking trails, packing a car/backpack, etc.). So, I felt that I was always missing out and wanted to give fire-building a try. Turns out, it is much harder than I anticipated! I made my first attempt earlier in the summer, but the damp evening conditions, the prior day's rain, and the minimal dry kindling we could find combined to make it a no-go. This time, I had just the right kind of kindling.

It was dry. It was small. It was the perfect combination of lumber chunks and rolled-up magazine pages...I think that's the secret ingredient!
Also, another bonus was that it was a very windy evening on the lake, as often happens in this part of northern Michigan, and so in addition to great fuel, we had great air flow. I managed to construct the teepee/cabin just as I had seen my friends and family do all these years, and despite a few worries early on that the large logs were not catching on fire, it eventually did get hot enough to do just that, and with just two large logs, it was a perfectly sized fire to make s'mores and keep warm on a brisk fall evening.

What: #16 Play Drag Queen Bingo
Where: Five 15 in Royal Oak
When: June 1
Why: Obviously this list isn't an original idea, and I consulted many versions of "things-to-do-before-you fill in the blank" lists prior to creating my own. My best recollection is that this must have come from one of those. My friends and I tried to go to this place a month or so back, but when we called for reservations, they were booked this far in advance, so I had high hopes for the sort of night we were in for at our first experience with Drag Queen Bingo. Some of my expectations involved big hair and make-up, boisterous personalities, lots of loud humor, probably some disco dancing; I blame the movie "The Birdcage" for most of my preconceived notions. So, upon entering the venue, it already is at odds with my image because it is clearly a dainty coffee shop, not a raucous bar.
And, there is just one drag queen. Wearing slippers. And the most shockingly inappropriate use of Disney princess attire that you could imagine. Think of the most innocent sweet little girl pajamas with the images of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White, and then cut the fabric out in certain places and put huge pillows in others. So, the first game gets started, and we realize that despite the catch phrase of "This ain't your grandma's bingo," it really kinda is, except, well, lamer.
Trust me, I spent many years playing bingo with my grandpa and always had a crazy good time with those Floridians. They have a ton of cards to keep track of, methods for choosing lucky ones, a huge variety of ways to win, contagious enthusiasm for the game, and plenty of fun jokes. Contrast that with the amount of money I paid to have one single bingo card, with lame numbers (I didn't even get to pick one with O-69!), assigned seating away from my other friends, the non-stop jokes that mixed lame bingo witticisms with crude humor, and the whole thing was more awkward for totally different reasons than I expected.
Our queen seemed to be going through the motions, which it turns out was much better than her/his attitude post-intermission. She/he came back, proclaimed "I'm just doing my job now, Bob", and then simply read off bingo numbers one after the other for the next 5-10 minutes, ignoring the polite requests and desperate pleas from the crowd to liven it back up (ie: "get over it!"), until finally someone won, putting us out of our misery, and that was the end of our night. Seriously. We all speculated what had upset her/him, but unanimously decided that, as a professional, if any of us got pissed at work, we'd have to continue with our jobs that day in a professional capacity, particularly if your job is as an entertainer for crying out loud. As my one friend said, we expected it to be a weird night, but for totally different reasons. Needless to say, we had to go out for a drink afterwards to process what we had all just been through at our first (sadly, probably last) Drag Queen Bingo experience. At least I had my girls with me who salvaged the night with their awesome company!

What: #13 Go to a psychic/tarot card/palm reader
Where: My friend's house party
When: April 20th
Why: I’m a walking contradiction when it comes to the supernatural. While I frequently will read my horoscope and admittedly use it to determine minor aspects of my upcoming day/week, I also take it with a grain of salt knowing it is intentionally vague enough for me to fill in the blanks.
As a huge believer in fate, I think that certain people or things show up in my life for a reason, but I also want to believe in free-will, knowing that I can choose a new path anytime I desire. So, with a large amount of skepticism, but also a healthy dose of curiosity, I accepted an invitation to my friend Lindsey’s psychic party. There were 7 of us there, and I was the last to have my reading, so it was interesting to see the looks on the faces of the others who went before me. Most of them looked freaked out, and told tales of how spot on the psychic was pulling big things out of the air about their health, their pasts, their families, upcoming life events, etc. There were a few stories told around the table that definitely were eerie with what she knew, and a few others that were ridiculous that she was trying to put something together that wasn’t there. Still, it seemed overall that she was hitting on some key points in each of their lives, so I was anxious to have my turn. I had thought ahead of time of a couple questions, general things like big events, names, dates, that sort of thing. And I also gave some thought to some of the unintentional signals I might give off and how that might be interpreted by a person who is incredibly intuitive, so I likely entered the room a bit more closed off than I normally am. Or a lot more. It was the skeptic in me taking over.

Right away, she started asking me about my sibling, and trying to make a connection with Chicago, and I wasn’t feeling it. There were other times that I felt she was reaching and heading down a path that led nowhere. Still, there were certainly a few things she said that stuck with me. I’m not saying they were deep dark secrets or she revealed any big hidden plans for my life. But, there was one issue in particular that she hit on that is not a common thing I’d think one would guess, although I suppose given enough pieces of a puzzle, it might be a small leap to this one. Anyhow, I have to admit after that short segment where it seemed she did discuss something most people wouldn't know about, I did start to pay a bit more attention to what she said. Some of it was out of left field (she is convinced my work place has a carbon monoxide problem that I need to alert the authorities about), but some of it made sense. So, if I’m spending more time at the pool, more money on clothes (because she referred to me and my attire as soccer-mom-ish on more than one occasion…really?!?), and more time in Canada, it’s all because the psychic told me to do it. Oh, and she intimated that I’d have two homes, adopt one kid and end up with a smart guy who cares about grammar…I feel like I just played "MASH" in middle school again! :)

What: #23 Volunteer at Food Gatherers
Where: Shelter Association of Washtenaw County
When: January 13th
Why: Ever since attending the event called "Grillin'" sponsored by the Food Gatherers organization a few years ago, I have wanted to volunteer for their cause.
My friend, Lindsey, and I have also always wanted to do a volunteer activity together, so these ideas merged into our Friday night plans this weekend. We worked in the kitchen to serve a dinner created with food donations gathered from organizations all over Washtenaw County. It was a difficult night, seeing the variety of people (about 130 unmarried men and women) who are in such need, and yet it was fulfilling to be involved in a small way. I was put on the serving line to collect meal tickets, hand out desserts, and dole out napkins. The work was not easy, emotionally or physically, but it was incredibly rewarding and a great opportunity and I hope to do it again, and really recommend it to others in the area!
