What: #56 Do a paint-n-pour outing

When: May 21, 2016
Where: The local Paint and Pour studio

Why: For special lady night!! The idea started when my friend Susie suggested a girlie weekend in Ann Arbor, doing the things we miss doing now that she lives on the east side of the state. As we were planning our list of fun outings, getting to check off this item seemed like a good idea and so we invited a few of our other friends to join us.

Our painting instruction started with wetting the canvas, then painting it white. I was feeling pretty competent at that start, so handled those two steps with ease. Then, we had to create the sky for our background by blending blue into our white canvas, and I feel like I had a pretty good handle on that, too. In fact, that was probably the part I was the best at doing, so if you ever need a sky painted on a ceiling or a mural, let me know!
Next, we had to put on the tree trunk and main branches, and here is where my intense rule-following tendencies really went to battle with the artistic flow of the instructions. I tried to copy the exact pattern of the example painting, altho I did try to break the mold by doing it in brown instead of black.

It turns out, however, that making brown is REALLY difficult! I started with orange, and tried to add blue to make it brown, but it kept looking green-ish. I finally got it right, but hadn't made enough in that batch, so I didn't feel like I could add much to my tree without the colors being very different. I know in real life, tree trunks are many colors, but this tree needed just one similar tone, and I couldn't get it.

Then, we were told to add leaves. A woman behind me asked "How many?" and as I strained to hear the answer, I caught the instructor saying that it did not matter. Obviously, the woman behind me was of the same rule-following mindset as me, and we needed parameters! Alas, we had to just go for it.

Then, we added flowers. Most people chose pink or white, but I went for orange! See, I'm already breaking rules!

Our finished products all have similar features, but I loved seeing how we each interpreted the assignment just a little bit differently based on our skills and personalities!

I know that many people have already done similar events - in fact, 4 of the 6 of us had done one before - but it was still a lot of fun to spend a night out, letting our creative minds take over, drinking to the word "moist", and generally having a great time out together!

What: #42 Host a game night for friends

When: December 3rd
Where: The living room
Why: A part of my personality is that I tend to be content hanging out on my own, and gravitate towards quiet evenings to decompress from hectic days at work. When invitations to go out for social engagements come up, I do accept because I truly enjoy being around friends and meeting new people, but I just don't usually create those opportunities in my own home (my sanctuary!). Recently, I wanted to get together with two groups of my girlfriends, and a game night seemed like a fun way to chat, laugh, and spend a nice evening on my couch with friends.

After buying some snacks and popping some popcorn, I got out the evening's entertainment. This particular group of friends is perfectly suited for a raucous card game, so that's what we played. I had a fun music mix playing, too, so we had background tunes to enjoy. If you haven't played the game before, I highly recommend it with a group of your girlfriends; but be warned that you may need to look up a definition or two on your smartphone for an educational experience you weren't expecting to get!

My next game night might include any friends willing to play dorky board games, so let me know if you are interested!

What: #85 Rent a beach house with girlfriends for a long weekend

When: Aug 1st-8th
Where: Corolla, North Carolina
Why: A few years ago, a few friends of mine got together to enjoy a long fall weekend and it was a great time just talking and eating, playing board games, bike riding, sitting in the hammock, and generally enjoying some quality female bonding time. That started me thinking of this idea. Then, I read a great fun book that put the destination in my head: The Outer Banks. Back in March - when the weather in Michigan makes you want to get kidnapped just to end up somewhere else - I started talking with my college friend Susie about getting a group of women together to make this a possibility, so with her help, we pulled it off!
So, we found a great house on Whalehead Beach that instantly felt like our home away from home. I've rented a lot of vacation condos and houses in my day - usually for skiing - so I know to keep expectations low when you actually see the place, but my gosh, we were beyond giddy at the house and the location! From our deck, we had a set of stairs that crossed over the dunes and right onto the beach!

The group of us did a great job dividing up groceries and deciding on meals to make together or restaurants to try, and we had a lot of space both indoors and outdoors to divide up and do whatever we wanted, which was a lot of lounging and reading and soaking up the incredible views. Each evening, we'd sit around and play games and laugh and chat about our various life stories. Some of us have been friends since college days, others just met, and we had a few wonderful moms of friends join us to see that getting less young is still a lot of fun!
For a non-morning person, the sunrises were totally worth it!
We had a lot of really great activities to do while we were there, too, so that by mid-week, we still hadn't left Corolla! We definitely hit our stride around Wednesday and really didn't want it to end! If you ever have the inclination to put together a trip like this, it's absolutely worth all the planning to make it a reality!! And because we saw only Corolla, we are all thinking we'd go back again to another part of the Outer Banks. It really is a magical place!!

Took a Hummer across the beach to see the Corolla Wild Horses
View of the Whalehead Club from the Currituck Lighthouse
Boogie boarding with Susie!
Sunset kayaking!
Seven of us, still having fun on Friday morning!!

What: #72 Mix a real drink for friends

When: November 21st
Where: My own kitchen!
Why: I'm not a hostess. This is just a part of my personality that I accept. I love being with my friends, going out to eat or to events, even hanging out at their place, but it is a rare occurrence for me to invite people over to my place. I'm not sure why this is - there are likely many theories - but I wanted to try to be more open to having people over on different occasions. I started too big trying to host a whole themed party the year I started these lists, and so I've since dialed it back to having close friends over for TV nights once in awhile. Those have all been a success, so I was ready to take the next step and invite friends over for happy hour. It seemed fair that I'd make drinks for them, but I realized that all I basically know how to make are fuzzy navels (my fave!). For this particular happy hour - a prelude event to going to see the newest Hunger Games movie - I tried to find something a little bit more unique. It was an added concern that my one friend is about 6 months pregnant, so it had to have a fair amount of ingredients that would make it delicious even as a virgin-style drink. So, what's a girl to do but JFGI...and when I did, I found an amazing list of drink recipes inspired by the Hunger Games! I took one of them, tweaked it a bit, and headed to the store to gather up the ingredients.

After procuring 100% pure pomegranate juice, Vernors, fresh lemons (all good for my pregnant friend!), and vodka (good for the rest of us!), I then had one last step: making simple syrup. The name is quite accurate, and after looking this up in my friend's car prior to heading to the store, I realized that even I could create simple syrup. After a few samples of my concoction prior to their arrival, I went to work as a bartender in my own kitchen. It must have been a huge success because I finished the night making 7 drinks for the 3 of us! And I'm happy to have leftover fixings to make another one or two for myself this weekend!

What: #71 Rock climb outdoors

When: October 25th-26th
Where: Red River Gorge, KY - Muir Valley
Why: A bit over 2 years ago, as part of my inaugural list, I joined some co-workers to try climbing. These co-workers - now two of my dearest and closest friends thanks to our time spent getting to know each other during climbing and other fun outings that grew from it - have always encouraged me to improve and to push myself when I climb, and they knew that one day I'd need to try climbing outside of the gym. It wasn't really a lack of desire or any fear that kept me from doing it; more like the logistics. There are not too many locations in the Midwest that work for good climbing, so it was going to take a weekend trip to make it happen, and finally that weekend (scheduled months in advance!) was upon us.

Heading to Kentucky, I was excited to think about a chance to climb outside in the fresh air, among the amazing fall colors we've been blessed with this autumn, and with a guy I totally trust; this was very key. Zach (who we knew when he managed our climbing gym) has dedicated himself to climbing in "The Red" for the past few months and knows his way around the valley and the routes and has always been known for his hyper-safe ways, so this was the perfect person to be our guide. We met up at Miguel's Pizza (*the* place to hang out/camp/eat as a climber down there) and listened as he described the first place he wanted to take us, and it sounded perfect for my first climb.

As I took my first few moves, it was definitely different than climbing indoors; the texture is better, the options for where to place your feet are much more varied, and the time it takes for each move is longer as you try to discern the next placement for your hand. And I loved it! My first climb, "Casey" on the Animal Crackers wall, was an incredibly fun 5.8 with a hidden second-layer to climb over the top, and it was a blast! My next climb that evening - a 5.9 at The Boneyard - was really fun to watch my friends climb, but didn't play to my strength, which is more balance versus the ability to pull myself up the first 6-foot roof, and so I was too tired to do much else, and still getting used to grabbing for the plates on the wall and trusting that they won't crack off in my hand.

With two climbs under my belt (harness) that first evening, and a delicious dinner of pizza and Ale81, I woke up the next day ready to see what else I could do. Our first climb of the morning was on the Guide Wall - a 5.8 + route - and I loved it! This, however, is when I realized how cold the rock wall can be and how crazy it is to climb by relying on your finger strength when, in fact, you can't feel your fingertips. Yet, it hardly mattered because I was having such a blast! From that first route of the day, we did the next route on that same rock wall, starting with a tricky crack move, ending with the same amazing view. After this, we took a break to hike up to the top of another rock wall and see the panorama of that section of the valley; it was so beautiful!

Resting halfway - Amazing photo by Zach
My next two climbs really made me work on them. The 5.10a that I tried would have been a route I could have climbed in the gym, but I have a lot less fear of taking a fall in the gym, knowing it's a flat wall with only a few obstacles if I hit it. On the rock face, the idea of falling and cracking my knees into the rock wall or scraping my hands and legs against jagged edges of rock did not appeal to me, so I was much more cautious about reaching for a move and quickly wore myself out, taking breaks after every couple of moves. Then, on my final ascent, I pushed myself to get to the top of this route. The beginning was fun, the middle was tricky (climbing a crack that had me worried about taking a fall and getting my hand or foot stuck to cause some serious damage), and then the top was a great climb up a series of plates. The overhang - a spot I mentally trip up on even now in the gym - did cause me to pause, worried about swinging out if I fell, but I had great encouragement to just go for it, so I did, shook out, and kept going.

This whole weekend was a fantastic trip, with lots of laughter and good food, and I'm proud of the successes I had on my first outdoor climbing trip, and can't wait to do it again in the spring!

What: #86 Kayak at Pictured Rocks

When: July 16th
Where: Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
Why: Despite my wanderlust, I still love my home state of Michigan and will always list off a dozen places that are must-sees in the mitten. One of those, Pictured Rocks, is pretty out of the way, and someplace I have not seen despite wanting to for many years. When I was younger, my family went to the Upper Peninsula ("the U.P.") for a vacation to see Tahquamenon Falls (I totally just spelled that right on the first try...definitely a Michigander!), and a few other stops, but I still missed out on this sight. Now that I've had more time to think about visiting the lakeshore to see the cliffs of Pictured Rocks, I realized that I wanted to do more than see them off the railing of a passing ship; I wanted to get so close I could touch them and kayaking along the cliffs became my dream.

As my dream became a reality, it was also infused with a bit of Michigan's sense of humor regarding our weather. The saying in our state is that if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes. In this case, we planned a trip in the middle of July, knowing it would be warm and nice out on Lake Superior. Instead, however, we had a freakish cold front blow down from the north, setting record lows for the nights we camped along the lakeshore and making the day we wanted to be on the water absolutely impossible to go out due to high waves and winds and low temperatures. Fortunately, we were able to rearrange our stay to head out onto the lake the next day, and while we were still contending with 3-foot high waves (no small feat in a kayak), it was sunny and made it an adventure worth having.

After three days of getting our feet wet in waterfalls, along sandy beaches, hiking about 15 miles, and running our hands along the cliffs, I feel that I can safely check off a visit to Pictured Rocks. If you are interested in details of planning a similar visit, I can let you know the best places to hike, eat, and stay!

See that space between the rocks...we are going through that...

What: #53 Go to a trampoline aerobics class

When: January 11th
Where: SkyZone
Why: In the winter months, it gets harder to be active because it is so cold. Running or biking outside aren't really options, and I loathe the treadmill and stationary bikes. I still climb every week and have started doing yoga with more regularity, yet I still crave new activities to get my heart pumping. And full disclosure: I'm anticipating a possible beach vacation in the near future, so this body needs to be ready for that, and after an extended vacation over the holidays, let's just say I enjoyed a lot of time on the couch with enormous bags of my Dad's famous homemade caramel corn. Yum!

So, after a year-long hiatus, my friends Elizabeth and Sara joined me for another adventure at the "tramp gym" (which, I realize, isn't a great term, but it's sticking around for the fun of it). This time we invited a few other great women to join us and have an impromptu bounce party to kick-off Elizabeth's annual 29th birthday!

The moves are definitely specific to the trampolines, and not really something you could duplicate on your own at home, and it requires the wearing of very cool socks (of which I'm now the proud owner!). A lot of the class was partner work with weighted balls you'd toss back and forth after a series of moves. One fun combination was to do five really high jumping jacks, a full twist, and air splits, all with the weighted ball. There were also a lot of plank movements, which were very difficult on the trampolines. This time, there were no flips, but there was the move where you fall all the way down to your backside and bounce back up to do the next move. I had a hard time doing that without using my hands to brace myself from falling back, which I'm assuming is due to a lack of core strength. Or, perhaps my abs were just exhausted from all the laughing...truly, that is an integral part of this workout!

What: #76 Swim with dolphins

When: February 21st
Where: Punta Cana
Why: The idea of interacting with intelligent animals has always been appealing, especially large mammals. I've had the joy of horseback riding, standing next to wild mountain gorillas, watching elephants and lions on safari, feeding giraffes, and now, playing with dolphins in the ocean! I really have no words, so I'll let the pictures speak for me...

What: # 96 Be in a swimsuit photo shoot

When: February 20th
Where: Arena Gorda Beach, Dominican Republic
Why: Honestly, this is one of those items I had left as a blank to add if something really intriguing came along that I wanted to include on my list. I feel like the point of the list is to go out of my comfort zone, and believe me, this was way WAY out of my comfort zone. Luckily, I was with friends who were super into it, so they paved the way for me to give it a try.

The resort where we stayed had a set of photographers that asked us if we wanted to do a photo shoot, and I assumed it would be fun pictures of us posing in simple group shots out on the beach. That was a small part of it, but what I did not expect was the extremely realistic bikini-clad photo shoot of each of us individually while passers-by gawked and everyone got to listen to the photographer continually shout "boobies up!" at me. Awkward.

I will say, I seriously have a lot more respect for bikini models. It is actually not pleasant to have sand in every crevice and cold waves splashing up your nose and did I mention getting sand lodged in places? Plus, the poses - while they do in fact look awesome - are super unrealistic and tricky to get into with your head tilted just right and your back arched and your feet in the right positions and your shoulders back and all the while sucking it in like crazy. The final product might look sexy (altho I refuse to show my photo to anyone), but it certainly feels ridiculous to get it!

What: #50 Check off a country I’ve never been to

When: February 17th
Where: Dominican Republic
Why: I have wanderlust, big time. I absolutely love watching my passport fill up; I'm on my second, and with this recent vacation, I am now at 14 different countries. It seems so small of a number, but every experience has left an important impression on my life.

This recent journey was a bit different than others because most of my time was spent at an all-inclusive resort complex, so I only saw the real country during an hour or so drive from the airport and to another half-day excursion. There are always comparisons in my head, and this country reminded me a lot of Peru and the more rural areas of Tanzania. It was great to be immersed in the Spanish language again - it is only something I've picked up during my travels, but it comes back in waves so I can communicate in basic conversation. Otherwise, the best part of my time in the country was the incredible weather. Warm and sunny 80s with puffy clouds and ocean breezes every day. I loved laying on the beach in the shade of a palm tree, listening to the waves, reading a couple books, people-watching, and generally unwinding in a gorgeous place.

What: # 87 Stay at an all-inclusive resort

When: Booked December 28
Where: Punta Cana
Why: When I travel, I usually do it on a budget, and I typically do all the research to find the best deals on flights, hotels, food, and things to see and do. While I do love planning (a lot!), it is also very time-consuming and at times a bit overwhelming. So, I've lived vicariously through a few friends who have taken trips in the past to all-inclusive resorts, and the idea seemed appealing on a certain level. This year, some friends and I decided to plan our own trip to a resort, and while it did still require a lot of decisions up front about where to go, how long to stay, and the types of adventures to have, it is now completely booked, and we just get to look forward to it; oh, and buy fun new beach clothes and bathing suits for our week of lounging in the sand and at the pools!

What: #99 Climb at Planet Rock in Ann Arbor

Where: Planet Rock
When: June 4
Why: In high school, I had the opportunity to do
some wall-climbing and really liked the challenge. In the following years, I've had other chances to do some climbing in a variety of less formal settings - like on a cruise ship (remember my Glamour appearance?). In an effort to keep finding new ways to be active and have fun, I bought a Groupon for climbing at the local Planet Rock gym. Two of my friends are climbing there together now, too, so I went along with them to get my first day in under my belt, or I guess under-my-harness is the more appropriate term. On that note, I learned a few other terms tonight, like "jugs" and "flashing," both of which - I was assured - are real climbing terms. I also learned how to tie some good knots!

Someday I hope to climb
the way Ashley does!
As my first time back in a climbing gym after quite a long hiatus, I went through the introductory lesson, and it didn't take long to remember some of the specifics of the process. I did a few climbs up the auto-belay just to get my nerves settled (heights aren't my favorite thing), and then joined in with my friends when they got there. I managed to get up two routes to the top, another one up over an overhanging obstacle (something I'd never done before) thanks to their great encouragement and belay skills, and then attempted a higher degree of difficulty on a later climb (a 5.8 route), but my arms had given out on me by that point. It takes a lot of upper body strength that I'm excited to build, altho less excited that I'm going to have to have stubby fingernails to really improve at all because otherwise, I can't get my fingers in the holds I need. Still, I definitely have the bug to go back again and keep improving!

What: #22 Buy a lottery ticket

Where: Random local gas station
When: March 27th
Why: It is one of those questions I always ask friends, "What would you do if you won the lottery?" and lately, it has been a common refrain in discussions about my future: "Well, if I won the lottery..." Turns out, that could be a lot more likely (and by this, I mean my chance increases from 0 to 1/175,000,000) if I actually take that step of purchasing a lottery ticket. So, with my friend Brittany's encouragement, I decided to check this one off today. I learned all kinds of lingo like "easy pick" and "megaplier," and I learned that the nice lady at the gas station was previously an elementary school teacher turned principal in her home country. Somehow, I'm taking this as a good sign. In fact, I've been on the lookout for all kinds of lucky charms the whole day. And I even put in a lot of thought into my numbers that I chose: 3, 16, 22, 33, 34, and 50. Anyone that can take a stab at where any of those came from is welcome to give it a try. And for those "Lost" fans out there, no, these aren't *those* numbers. :)

In part two of this story, I also wanted some more immediate gratification from my foray into the world of the lottery, so I also bought a scratch off card and guess what, I won!! That's right, I am a "Wild Time" lottery winner! I chose to use the specific method my friend uses to reveal her potential winnings. Hint: scratch everything off all at once...this is incredibly fun!...and only then should you go back to read the specifics and determine if you've won. Which, did I mention, I DID! (In the interest of full disclosure, I won $4, and paid $2 for the card, but still, I'm claiming a victory here!).

So, the big MegaMillions jackpot is at $363 million, and who couldn't use a bit o' spare change like that to make their day just a bit brighter? Granted, I've already committed a portion of it to Brittany for her support today, and to a few other friends along the way, so you better get in your formal request soon if you want a piece of my massive fortune!

Definitely winners! :)
